Moorish Lattice Hat

Moorish Lattice Hat

Okay, I made a very similar version of this exact hat last year, for someone's Christmas gift. And when I discovered that it had been loved to the point of falling apart, I figured it was time to make a new one, and this time write the pattern down. I hope you enjoy it as much as the recipient!

Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Grande (100% Baby Alpaca; 110 yards (100 grams); #701 Ink Melange – one skein
The back!

Needles: One 16" circular needle in size US 10.5, one set of double-pointed needles (dpns), also in size US 10.5

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker

Gauge: 12 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Using circular needle, cast on 72 stitches loosely, place marker, and join in round. Next, work 1.5" in a k1, p1 ribbing. Once the ribbing is done, we'll get down to business. And the pattern we'll be using is Moorish Lattice from page 232 of Barbara G. Walker's A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, which I've adapted for the round. So let's get started!

First, we'll knit three set-up rows, which go as follows:

Set-up rows 1 - 3: * p3, k3; rep from *

And then we'll move on to the main pattern, which goes as follows:

Row 1: * p3, sl2-k1-p2sso * (see modified instructions below for every subsequent repeat of this row)

Row 2: * p3, k1 *

Row 3: * p3, (k1, yo, k1) in next stitch *

Rows 4 - 6: * p3, k3; rep from *

Row 7: * p3tog, k1, (k1, yo, k1) in next stitch, k1 *

Rows 8 - 10: * k2, p3, k1 *

Knit rows 1 - 10 twice and then knit rows 1-4 again, replacing the instructions for row 1 with the following each subsequent time you come to it: remove marker, slip two stitches, and replace marker; then, * p3, sl2-k1-p2sso *. And once you've knit all that, it's time to begin the decreases, which go as follows:

Decrease Row 1: * p2tog, p1, k3 *

Row 2: * p2tog, k3 *

You're going to want to switch to your dpns right about now...

Row 3: * p1, sl2-k1-p2sso *

Rows 4 & 5: * p2tog *

Clip tail, and thread through final 6 stitches. Pull tight, thread to inside of hat, and knot. Tuck in ends.

    1. Thanks! I think it's a nice hat... especially in this yarn!

  2. I've gotten thru the knitting rows 1-10 twice, but not sure how many times to do rows 1-4 before decreasing. Amy

  3. Hi; can I ask about the needle size? Is that US size 10.5?

  4. No worries; love the pattern! Thank you for posting. Would it be difficult to amend to fit children's size? I am knitting for a charity drive and would love to add this hat. Thank you again!

    1. Hi again!

Unfortunately, due to the yarn gauge and number of rows that the stitch pattern requires, this would be a difficult pattern to adapt for a smaller size using the same gauge of yarn. However, if you simply reduced the ribbing by 1/2" and made the hat with a yarn that gives you 14 stitches = 4 inches instead of the 12 stitches = 4 inches that I use, I think you'd basically have a child-sized hat! :)

    1. Glad you like the hat! And I love all of the PrintFriendly pdf business too - Internet printing can be so frustrating otherwise!!!! Glad you enjoy that functionality as well. :)

  7. Hi! Could you clarify for me if the modified first row (remove marker, slip two stitches, replace marker, then p3, sl2-k1-p2sso) should be used for the second time I do row 1 (after my first completion of rows 1 through 10)? Or do I repeat rows 1 through 10 twice before I use the modified row 1? Thank you!

    1. Hi there!

You only knit the first version of row 1 once (the first time), and then knit the modified version each time after. Hope that helps! :)

    1. Hi! Sorry, but the way I wrote this pattern means that the row break changes every pattern repeat, so I can't adapt it directly for flat knitting.

  9. I’m a little confused on row 3. It says knit one, yarn over, knit one, but I only have one knit stitch between the purls. Should it be yarn over, knit one, yarn over?

    1. Hi! The pattern is correct, it's just that the (k1, yo, k1) should ALL happen in that one knit stitch - it's an increase!

Here's a link to a video - if you don't like this one, there are lots more if you Google it. https://youtu.be/ctkicEn4iG0

      Hope that helps! :)
