Bump Up From Basics Beanie

Bump Up From Basics Beanie
Pictured in Child Size

Okay, I'm doing something a little bit different with this pattern, since I'm not offering it on my website, but through a video tutorial I created on Skillshare instead. Which means that, yes, I've had to face my fear of being on camera (don't worry, I deleted all the takes where I opened my eyes super-wide for no reason), and that this pattern is not technically "free" since it requires a membership on the website to access it. If you sign up through the link above, however, you can get 3 months on the website for $0.99, and access to tons of video content from all sorts of talented and amazing people (and I get some compensation as well!).

Oh, and as far as the actual pattern is concerned - I designed the Bump Up From Basics Beanie as a sort of next-level project for beginning knitters who've gotten comfortable with knitting and purling and are ready to move on to something more complicated. Or in other words, I demonstrate every technique you need to make this hat in the video except for knitting, purling, and tucking in your ends! :)

Anyway, here are the details:

Yarn: Cascade Yarns 128 Superwash (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 128 yards [117 meters]/100 grams); #1964 Cerise - 1 - 2 skeins

Sizes: Child (Adult Small; Adult Large)

Needles: One 16" circular needle in size US 9 (optional), one 16" circular needle in size US 10, one set of double pointed needles (dpns), also in size US 10, and one crochet hook, preferably between 5 & 6 millimeters

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker, 24" of scrap yarn, preferably cotton

Gauge: 14 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette on size US 10 needles

And if you'd like to check it out, click here! :)

  1. I'm disappointed in not being able to access the pattern without yet another fee and "joining up" requirement. I'm an intermediate knitter and would love the pattern for my grandchildren but no dough--I'm not joining. I get your newsletter and expect the patterns to be there as usual. If this is how you will do things from now on, I may have to stop getting your very informative email.

    1. Hi Linda!

I'm sorry to hear that you were disappointed by this pattern. As you may have noticed, I offer over 200 free patterns on my website, and plan to continue to offer the vast majority of them for free as well. However, I am experimenting with other formats, and put a huge amount of time and effort into creating this video tutorial. If $0.99 seems excessive for three months of access to thousands of video tutorials, then feel free not to subscribe! The choice, as ever, remains yours. :)

    2. I am shocked that Linda could be not only stingy, but quite rude as well. Gretchen you offer hundreds of original patterns and brilliant instructions and follow up for anyone requiring help. If Linda can afford wool I am pretty sure she can afford a dollar. I know as I am sure everyone else does that patterns like your cost around $6 each on average. Anyway, her loss.
Keep up the good work Darlin, and look
After those arms. My dollar is on its way.

  2. Gretchen, This is a very reasonable membership fee - especially considering all the freebies you've given us!!! Could there be any cuter face in these pictures?!!!!! NO!!!! Darling pattern as always. Big hugs, happy holidays and thanks for everything as usual. Kimmy P.S. Perhaps it's time to start moderating your comments...

    1. Hi Kimmy!

Thanks for your kind words, and happy holidays to you as well! :) And, for the record, this is not the "new normal," simply one option for people who prefer to see videos rather than a written pattern! Oh, and I think he's cute too!!! ;)
