Beauty of a Basketweave Hat

Beauty of a Basketweave Hat

Recently, AllFreeKnitting offered me the opportunity to review this yarn, Brown Sheep Company's Lanaloft, and design an exclusive pattern for their site. And obviously, since I'm only human (and cannot resist the thought of receiving yarn IN THE MAIL like it's freaking magic), I jumped at the chance. For now, you'll have to visit their site to find the pattern, though. You can find more pictures and the link below. :)

Yarn: Brown Sheep Company, Inc. Lanaloft (100% Wool; 160 yards [146 meters]/100 grams); LL83W Victorious Violet – 1 skein

That, my friends, is a basketweave.
Needles: one 16” circular needle in size US 7, one 16” circular needle in size US 8, one set of double pointed needles (dpns), also in size US 8

Notions: stitch marker, tapestry needle

Gauge: 18 stitches = 4 inches on size US 8 needles

As promised, then, you can find the rest of the pattern here. Make it, and be merry!

  3. Hi, Gretchen
Can this be made on normal needles as I have never used the circular needles. Thank you so much for sharing such lovely patterns and supporting new knitters like me.

    1. Hi there!

First off, I have to make a small plug for knitting in the round, because it's often actually easier since you're only working on the right side. If you're not ready, though, I've adapted the pattern for flat knitting below. I haven't knit it myself though, so please let me know if you have any questions or problems! :)

Using your size 7 circular needle, cast on 98 stitches loosely. Since this hat has no edging, we’re going to move right to the main pattern, which goes as follows. Do note, however, that you’ll be changing to your size 8 circular needles after half of the pattern motif (it’s also noted below).

      Rows 1, 3, & 5 (right side): slip 1 stitch with yarn in back, * p7, k5; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left, k1

Rows 2 & 4: slip 1 with yarn in front, * p5, k7; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, p1

Row 6: slip 1 with yarn in front, purl until end of row

On your first pattern repeat, here’s where you’ll switch to your size 8 needles. Go ahead and ignore this note after you switch your first time, since that’s the only switch there is!

      Rows 7, 9 & 11: slip 1 stitch with yarn in back, * p1, k5, p6; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left, k1

      Rows 8 & 10: slip 1 with yarn in front, * k6, p5, k1; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, p1

Row 12: slip 1 with yarn in front, purl until end of row

Knit rows 1 – 12 four times, and then we’ll begin the decreases. So let’s proceed as follows:

Decrease Row 1 (right side): slip 1 with yarn in back, * (p1, p2tog) twice, p1, k5; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, k1 (82 stitches)

Decrease Row 2: slip 1 with yarn in front, * p5, k5; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, p1

      Decrease Row 3: slip 1 with yarn in back, * p1, p3tog, p1, k5; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left, k1 (66 stitches)

Decrease Row 4: slip 1 with yarn in front, * p5, k3; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, p1

Decrease Row 5: slip 1 with yarn in back, * p3tog, k5; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, k1(50 stitches)

Decrease Row 6: slip 1 with yarn in front, purl until end of row

Decrease Row 7: slip 1 with yarn in back, * p1, ssk, k1, k2tog; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, k1 (34 stitches)

Decrease Row 8: slip 1 with yarn in front, * p3, k1; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, p1

Decrease Row 9: slip 1 with yarn in back, * p1, slip 2 together knitwise-k1-p2sso; rep from * until you have 1 stitch left in row, k1 (18 stitches)

Decrease Row 10: slip 1 with yarn in front, * p2tog until you have 1 stitch left in row * p1 (10 stitches)

Clip yarn tail, use tapestry needle to thread through remaining 10 stitches, and pull tight. Thread to inside of hat and knot. Seam from brim to top, thread to inside of hat and knot. Tuck in ends.

    2. Thanks Gretchen!!! How many stitches do I need if I am making it for 10-11 year old child

    3. Cast on 86. I think you might also want to leave off one pattern repeat because I remember this hat being a bit on the longer side, but it's probably best to decide that once you get there because my memory might be faulty! :)

    4. Thanks Gretchen!!! The instructions are perfect except a no of stitches in the decreasing row are different to one you have put. Amazing beanie and I did the 4 repeats as given in the original pattern.
Now trying the Rickrack braid hat!!!

    5. Uh oh! Don't know how that happened but it seems it worked out in any case. Let me know if you have any more questions!!! :)

    6. Thanks for the question, Rachna, and the response, Grethcen! I had the exact same question since I'm planning on making this for my 10 yo brother for Christmas, and I assume this is in women's sizing. :) I'm planning on having a ~2" rib edging before I get into the meat of the pattern, so I'll let you know how it goes for me and how many repeats of the pattern I end up doing with those modifications!
