Tilting Ladder Hat

Tilting Ladder Hat

Okay, so I made a hat like this for myself nearly a year ago, but, like a genius, I didn't write down the pattern. Then I didn't have any chunky yarn. Finally, however, I bought some and recreated the hat, as I think it's a really fun to knit, fast, and interesting pattern that's a nice weight for fall (with the holes and all). So let's get to it!

Yarn: Bernat Alpaca (70% Acrylic, 30% Alpaca; 120 yards [110 meters]/100 grams); #93310 Plum - 1 skein

Needles: one 16" circular needle in size #10, one set of double-pointed needles (dpns), also in size #10, cable needle (cn) or dpn for cabling
The finishing

Notions: tapestry needle

Gauge: 15 stitches = 4 inches

Using circular needle, cast on 78 stitches, place marker, and join in round. Work 6 rows in a ribbing, which goes like so:

Ribbing row: * (k1, p1) five times, k1, p2 *

Once your six ribbing rows are complete, it's time to move to the Tilting Ladder pattern, which comes from page 210 of Barbara G. Walker's A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. It also goes as follows (after being adapted for the round, of course):

Row 1: * k5, p1, k5, p2 *

Row 2: * k5, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *

Rows 3 & 5: * k4, p2, k5, p2 *

Row 4: * k4, p2, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *

Row 6: * slide two stitches to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p2, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *

Rows 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12: repeat rows 3, 4, 5, and 6, then rows 3 & 4 again

Row 13: repeat row 1

Row 14: * (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p1, k5, p2 *

Rows 15 & 17: * k5, p2, k4, p2 *

Row 16: (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p2, k4, p2 *

Row 18: (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p2, slide two stitches to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p2 *

Rows 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24: repeat rows 15, 16, 17, and 18, then rows 15 & 16 again

Knit rows 1 - 24 once, and then knit row 1 one final time. Now let's begin the decreases!

Decrease row 1: * k2tog, k3, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *

Decrease row 2: * k2tog, k2, p1, k5, p2 *

Decrease row 3: * k2tog, k1, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *

Now it's time to switch to your dpns!

Decrease row 4: * k2tog, p1, k5, p2 *

Decrease row 5: * p2tog, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *

Decrease row 6: * p1, k5, p2tog *

Decrease row 7: with yarn in back, slip first stitch in row to the end of your last dpn. Then * k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2tog *

Decrease row 8: * ssk, k3, p1 *

Decrease row 9: * ssk, yo, k2tog, p1 *

Decrease row 10: * ssk, k1, p1 *

Decrease row 11: * ssk, p1 *

Decrease row 12: * ssk *

Clip yarn, thread on tapestry needle, and pass through remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight, knot, and bring tail to inside of hat. Tuck in ends. And you're done!!!

  2. I've been knitting for a while and I tend to get stuck on the same thing for a little bit, it was hand warmers but now I am happily stuck on making your hats. Thank you so much for your generosity, they're beautiful and the patterns are well written.

    1. Yay! I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying my hat patterns. I get kind of obsessive about my decrease design. :) Anyway, let me know if you ever have any questions. I'm always happy to help!

    1. Here you go! I changed where the stitches lay on decrease row 7 of the original hat - I *think* I correctly factored for that here, but it's hard for me to visualize. If your decreases aren't lining up after decrease row 7, it's because I'm one stitch off in one direction or another. It should be an easy fix/adjustment! :)

Cast on 80 stitches (you could use a smaller needle to do this; this is one of my earlier patterns so I don’t give that instruction). Then work 6 rows in a ribbing, which goes like so:

      Ribbing row 1 (wrong side): p1, * k2, p1, (k1, p1) five times; rep from *, end p1

      Ribbing Row 2 (right side): k1, * (k1, p1) five times, k1, p2; rep from *, end k1

Knit these rows 3 times in total, change needles if you started with a smaller one, and then proceed as follows:

      Row 1 (wrong side): p1, * k2, p5, k1, p6; rep from *, end p1

      Row 2: k1, * k5, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2; rep from *, end k1

      Rows 3 & 5: p1, * k2, p5, k2, p4; rep from*, end p1

      Row 4: k1, * k4, p2, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2; rep from *, end k1

Row 6: k1, * slide two stitches to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p2, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2; rep from *, end k1

      Rows 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12: repeat rows 3, 4, 5, and 6, then rows 3 & 4 again

      Row 13: repeat row 1

      Row 14: k1, * (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p1, k5, p2; rep from *, end k1

      Rows 15 & 17: p1, * k2, p4, k2, p5; rep from *, end p1

      Row 16: k1, * (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p2, k4, p2 ; rep from *, end k1

Row 18: k1, * (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p2, slide two stitches to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p2; rep from *, end k1

      Rows 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24: repeat rows 15, 16, 17, and 18, then rows 15 & 16 again

Knit rows 1 - 24 once, and then knit row 1 one final time. Now let's begin the decreases!

      Decrease row 1 (right side): k1, * k2tog, k3, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 ; rep from *, end k1

      Decrease row 2: p1, * k2, p5, k1, p2, p2tog; rep from *, end p1

      Decrease row 3: k1, * k2tog, k1, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2; rep from *, end k1

      Decrease row 4: p1, * k2, p5, k1, p2tog; rep from *, end p1

      Decrease row 5: k1, * p2tog, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2; rep from *, end k1

      Decrease row 6: p1, * k2tog, p5, k1; rep from *, end p1

      Decrease row 7: k2, * k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2tog *

      Decrease row 8: * k1, p4, ssp; rep from *, end p2

      Decrease row 9: k1, * ssk, yo, k2tog, p1 *

      Decrease row 10: * k1, p2, ssp; rep from *, end p1

      Decrease row 11: k1, * ssk, p1; rep from *, end k1

Decrease row 12: * ssp; rep from *, end p1

Clip yarn, thread on tapestry needle, and pass through remaining 8 stitches. Pull tight, knot, and bring tail to inside of hat. Seam and tuck in ends.
